Artist's sketch of the killer in an apparent roadside murder in Putnam County was released Monday, along with preliminary autopsy results.Artist's sketch of the suspect Summer Smith, 36, Ormond Beach, was killed by a single gunshot, according to those results released by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.Based on details provided by Smith's fiancé, Clint Horvatt, the sheriff's office developed a sketch of Smith's alleged killer, a man Horvatt described as a black man in his late 20s about 6 foot tall with a thin build. He reportedly was wearing his hair in cornrows and had on black jeans, a black T-shirt and a zip-up grey hooded sweatshirt.
Horvatt told investigators the shooting happened at about 2:50 p.m.Friday on State Road 26 east of Melrose. Horvatt said he and Smith had been engaged for about 18 months and planned to marry after he found employment.According to Horvatt, the couple was going shopping when Smith asked him to pull over because she saw a red pickup truck alongside the road that she thought she recognized. A man got out the truck, walked up to Smith's passenger window and demanded the couple's valuables, Horvatt told deputies. Smith was reportedly shot in the head during a struggle over her purse.Horvatt drove off and flagged down an ambulance. Smith was pronounced dead at Shands at the University of Florida at 6:30 p.m. Smith had moved to the area about two years ago. She is a former Ms. Motorsports, a title she won in a regional auto racing beauty pageant in 1994. Smith's funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Assembly of God Church, 119 Country Road in Interlachen.
