Steven Leroy Stone ordered federal witness David Wayne Lee Jr. to be killed, and for that crime he should spend at least 25 years behind bars, federal prosecutors will argue at Stone's sentencing hearing Monday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore.
Friday afternoon, federal prosecutors laid out their arguments for a minimum of 25 years in their 14-page sentencing memorandum.Stone, 25, of Frederick is the fourth of five defendants to be convicted in Lee's July 2005 death along Reichs Ford Road about two weeks before Lee was court-ordered to testify against Stone and others in a federal drug and weapons investigation. On June 2, Stone pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit witness tampering and possession of a firearm in the furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and a crime of violence resulting in death, prosecutors reveal for the first time in their memorandum. The maximum penalty for both charges is life imprisonment. The memorandum identifies Steven Stone as the mastermind of Lee's killing. The memorandum also discloses some facts undisputed in the June plea agreement accepted by Stone. That:In spring 2005, Stone and others began to suspect Lee was cooperating with authorities, providing them with information about drug trafficking and criminal activity. In June or July 2005, Stone offered several people money to kill Lee and developed a plan to burn down Lee's home. Although Stone bought gasoline for the fire, the plan fell through while Stone and others headed to Lee's residence. On July 7, 2005, while Stone was in New York to buy drugs, conspirators agreed that Jesse Dorsz would murder Lee. Plans were made to pick up Lee.Late July 7, 2005, Lee asked to get out of a car to urinate on the side of the road."Dorsz exited the car and shot Lee twice in the back of the head, killing Lee."
Early July 8, 2005, Steven Stone's father, Chester Stone, disposed of the gun.
